Comic-Con — When a Global Event Belongs to a City

Every summer, San Diego transforms during Comic-Con International, one of the largest pop culture conventions in the world. Hotels fill, downtown streets buzz with activity, and fans from
across the globe arrive to celebrate comics, film, television, gaming, and creative arts.

What many visitors don’t realize is how deeply Comic-Con is woven into the city itself.

While the San Diego Convention Center hosts the main event, the experience extends far beyond its walls. Local businesses create themed menus and displays. Public spaces host
interactive installations. Residents volunteer, attend panels, or simply join the excitement downtown. For many San Diegans, Comic-Con is both an economic engine and a point of civic
pride.

The convention also has strong roots in education and creativity. Founded in 1970 by fans and artists, it has long supported comic arts, storytelling, and youth engagement programs. Even as
it has grown internationally, that community foundation remains part of its identity.

Comic-Con demonstrates how a large-scale event can still feel connected to place — when a city embraces it. For one week each year, San Diego becomes a global gathering point for
imagination and creativity, while still reflecting the enthusiasm and participation of the local community that hosts it.

It’s community on a grand scale.
